Are you looking for a silver bullet my friend?

(Your thruth is your truth, I`m not judging it. This post is not based on science in any form.)

Recently in a chatgroup where I was participating, a member shared a video containing someone sharing a conspiracy theory about whats going on in the world right now. This was followed by a rather heated discussion, emotions were running high as the perticipants either sided with the person posting it as well as the ones opposing the content.

It all made me wonder, what makes people keep looking for "alternative truths", the truths that other people then educated experts are sharing? And how come the very same people often refers to others, who wont share their beliefs, as "sheeps" or "unawake"? This will most likely not be the only post I write about this subject since I find it so fascinating.

I spoke with a friend of mine, whom I know have a lot of knowledge in a lot of different areas of life, about what occured. I really felt that I needed to vent what had happened and the reactions to it.

My friend mentioned a man (not sure wether it was a psychologist or a professor) that had compared conspiracy theories to the stories back in the days about werewolves for example.

One or several people gets attacked brutally in a village and dies. Their body/bodies are discovered with gashes on it. Noone truly knows what has happened, surely no human could do that to another human being? If it was a human doing it that would be a murderer amongst the people, is it someone that you know? Surely noone you know could be that violent? (Bare in mind that in those times communities were most often smaller then now)

The thought of someone you know doing such a thing is rather scary. So, lets try and find another perpetrator, another explanaition to what has happened.
Could it be..  a werewolf?

People were afraid of werewolves so what they did were to research every single bit of knowledge that they could gain about werewolves. Where, do you get the most knowledge about werewolves? In a time where not everyone had any easy access to books (or didnt even know how to read) they most likely sought out the company of others who also believed in werewolves and therefor they could share their knowledge with eachother about the subject.
(Did you know by the way that there is still instructions on how to kill a werewolf online? Those actually seems to be written by people that do belive that they exist for real.)

So, some of the most spread ways of killing a werewolf is with silver bullets or by using mercury. That became a truth of the time that became common knowledge.

Now, everyone who knew that and were that were afraid of a werewolf  lurking around close by, just needed to get themselves a silverbullet or mercury to feel abit safer. They suddenly have some form of protection against something that they first couldnt even explain but definatly found scary.

If we cant find a reason to something that we consider a threat, we will search for one.

We will find something to call our truth because that way we can handle the fear and maybe even find some sort of protection or remedy. We will find something to focus on and we will find evidense that supports "our" truth. These days, you can find basicallly tons of sources to support any "truth" in any subject you like. If it`s the "real truth" or not doesnt matter, we will find it if we look.

However, at the end of the day, remember to be very critical when you look for your answers online. If you are frightened of something your brain wont censor the information you receive as well as at other times, and you might be going down a trail you normally never would have put your foot on otherwise.

Take care, be critical and have a great day now!
